Animal and Child Portraits
Likeness is important in a portrait. But I believe it’s even more important to reveal the subject’s spirit. This is my primary object when I do portrait work, whether I’m painting animals or people. My freely painted, impressionistic style assists me in this goal.
The portrait painting process
When you commission a portrait from me, I work closely with you at every step of the way to be sure you are happy with the final results.
I am equally willing to work from life or from photos, in your choice of watercolor, oil/acrylic, or charcoal. For children and animals, working from photos is generally more practical, especially if you live outside my area. If you are interested in a portrait, please contact me about choosing suitable photo references.
Once we’ve decided on references, for paintings I generally first do a few loose preliminary sketches in black and white. This helps to determine the final composition. This is especially important for a full body pose, and for action poses. Only once we’ve agreed on the basic pose and color theme will I begin work on the painting.
Types of portraits
Traditional portraits: I will accept portrait commissions of any age person; however I have a special affinity for children. I’m happy to paint any animal subject as well. The most common request is for a portrait of a single individual. I can also do double and group portraits. If necessary I can combine photo references of two or more individuals into a single painting.

Horse action portraits: Here my focus is more on movement, mood and spirit than a photo-realistic likeness. The painting at right, of a horse named Story Boy, is an example. This approach is especially effective in capturing the power and grace of horses. However, I’d be happy to apply it to other animals and athletes as well.

Spirit animal portraits: Do you have a totem animal or spirit guide? I will paint you and your spirit animal together, in one, uniquely meaningful painting. A truly beautiful way to celebrate your connection with your totem guide. (If you are unsure of your totem animal but would like help in discovering and connecting with it, contact me about my Discover Your Power Animal service.)
